Steering box clunk
 

Hey everyone,

I have a clunk that happens when I turn and after removing the steering box I saw a crack. It looks like the crack is on one of the cylinders that separates the two parts of the frame. As in the bolt goes in one side of the frame, then out the other, through the spacer and into the steering box. Between the two sides of the frame, it looks as if there is some sort of cylinder that the bolts go though and that brace the two sides of the frame. There is a crack in the top one. I cannot find any information how how to get a replacement or if it can be replaced. Any help would be appreciated.

Any pictures? I think I know what you are saying but just want to be sure

If I am getting this right, those fitting/spacers are inside the frame, and I have never seen a thread about them. I have seen threads about the frame cracking, where the steering box goes up against. I think people just end up welding more metal over it, putting in a beefier bracket.

However, I am not sure that is your issue is the frame is not cracked. Was the steering box moving when the wheels turned side to side? If not, it could something else like the stabilized bar links bushings.

I should have taken some pictures when I had it off. I'll try to get some tomorrow. But yes the frame itself does not seem to be cracked, but the fitting/spacer for the top bolt is. I had someone turn the wheel while I checked it out and the clunking noise was definitely coming from where the steering box mounts. If I get a beefed up steel spacer do you think that would be enough to get rid of the clunk? I can't find anything on how to replace those spacers inbetween/inside the frame.

there is a couple of kits that replace the whole arrangement, spacer, frame reinforcing plate, thru bolts etc

But cannot find any instructions on how to install the three cylinders inbetween the unibody. It says in the description to drill from the outside to fit them in. But I would feel more comfortable doing that if I had a video or descriptive instructions on how to do so since I never have before.

Can you point me in the direction of a video that shows it? I've been searching for hours but only see how to install the spacer itself.
