Starts and dies after running out of gas numerous times

I started to run out of gas on this long stretch of road that I live off of. Made it to the gas station while it was sputtering. No problem, I've done it before. Fill it up, turn over, go somewhere.

Well, I filled it up, wouldn't turn over. Tried giving it some gas. Nothing. So I pushed it to the parking lot, got a new fuel filter and put it on. This is what isn't making sense. My fuel pump is definitely working. It's doing it's job. The fuel filter is new, not clogged at all. The old filter was pouring BROWN when I pulled it off. I'm getting fuel to the rail. It's getting the fuel from point a to b. So where is the issue? Installed a new starter in January. New cap and rotor and wires and plugs in 2013. I did pull a plug wire and put a Philips head to it but I got no spark. Any ideas? It cranks and cranks and cranks but doesn't fully turn. Any help is much appreciated. Y'all rule:thumbup1:

You need to verify fuel pressure first. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but it should be 31-39 psi.

I would look at the CPS since there is no spark.

And turning over means the engine is cranking when you try to start it, it is just not firing. I would clarify that this is a "crank, no start" issue.

Good catch. Guess I didn't pay any attention to the "no spark" part... :icon_redface:

Here's how to test the sensor:

sbtm is correct.

Let's start with correct terminology. If it "cranks and cranks and cranks" then it does fully turn. That's what "turn over" means.

What it's not doing is starting.

I would start with the obvious, test the battery. Check all fuses and relays.
Next, see if power is getting to the distributor. If no power, check the ignition coil.

Also ill just add, if this is for the 91 that your handle says, look up cruisers tip. Renixs have a common grounding issue that can cause all sorts of problems. Could all just be coincidence. It's crazy you let you vehicle run so low on gas and then let the system suck up any sediments on the bottom of the tank like that. Plus gas is what cools the pump. No gas, pump heats up.and yes. Test CPS

New CPS, shuts off immediately after starting.

Thanks to all of you for helping me out over the years. I replaced my crankshaft position sensor. The walk through links provided were incredibly helpful. Now, she starts. But turns off immediately after starting. I'm not sure what it is now. I don't know what it could be. I've read that it could be the ignition switch. But why would it act up as soon as I replace the CPS? Any help is much appreciated, of course.

starts, runs, dies?

Jump this ballast resistor and see if it still does that.

Disconnect both wires and run a wire between them, eliminating the resistor.

What type of wire and where can I get it?
