Ok well I have a 94 4.0 auto 231. Its about 50/50 whether it will start first twist of the key. When it does turn over it sounds strong and normal, but sometimes I get nothing at all. Radio starts, battery is fine, about 2 months old actually, so no problems there. This all started about 4 days ago and has been working out really well to not turn over when in the worst places.

I dont know if this is just a mind game or actually has something to do with it but, if I jiggle the shifter in the park position it will start first try afterwords. Is there some kind of sensor that tells the car its in park?

Like I said it sound great when it works, WHEN being the key word

 

I'd bet it's the neutral safety switch.
