Default Starting my build, have some questions about a OME 2.5" System

Hi guys,

I'm pretty new here and I'm new to owning a Cherokee. I'm 17 years, I get my license next month so I'm ready to do some work to my cherokee.

My Xj:

91 Cherokee Laredo.Just hit 200k. D35/D30, NP231,AW4.

I picked it up for $1000 and traded one my dad's firearms for it.

Runs great, body is perfect, interior is perfect except for headliner.

I plan on buying this kit used locally:http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?partID=11517

The guy is looking for $425.Was on his wife's xj for 6000 miles, they upgrades to longarms.

My first question is tire size,I'm running 31x7 General Mud Terrains that rub some now offroad, and severely limit my flex.I know this kit should work well with these, but I'm wondering how big I can go with some minor trimming?

Second question is, my local jeep guy is worried I'll need control arms,I thought you didn't need them until the lift is bigger?

And I was already planning on getting a hack n tap sye, only if I need it, what's the general opinion on these hack n taps?

And if anyone has any pictures of their xj running this kit, feel free to post them up.

Thanks,

Logan

At that size of lift you should not have to do control arms , tc drop or a SYE.
Im at 4" on my 93 and have none of those and no problems.

I'm running 2.5" OME lift. I have a large selection of photos on this site... click the "my photos" under my user name... in the meantime, here is one...

At 2.5" you will not "need" aftermarket control arms/track bar but they would allow more flex... so, start saving.
On a 91 I would be very suprised if you get driveline vibrations at 2.5" of lift. You will want to shim the rear axle tho. If you do get vibrations, Hack'n'taps do the trick. Mine lasted about 8 years... approx. 80,000 miles before it plain wore out.
I am running 33x10.50's with what I consider minmial trim.

Number One...

CONGRATS on joining the greatest club on earth!!!
Owning a Cherokee is a lifestyle.
You'll love it!

Number two...

Research-research-research-

There are a couple of other forums much like this one and it wouldn't be a bad idea to become a member of two or all three. That was you can get as much advice and opinions as possible.

Number three-
IMO (in my opinion) (I just got my cherokee as well) I'm not going to put used leafs on my 98. I'm kinda afraid that they'll have been beat on by someone else, possibly bent past the point of sagging and I just don't know it yet. I figured it's worth the extra 2 months of saving up, and I'll get something new, especially if you keep looking for a sale- like in the vendor section of one of these forums.

Number 4-
Cool picts of the rock climbing Mike, I hope i get to do that someday-
I'm not sure Arizona wants to jump right to chopping his fenders though.
The 31's should ride nice under ANY lift-2, 2.5, 3.
More than three and you might have to upgrade to look good.

5- Have you checked the bushings on the control arms?
or for that matter, on the front control/steering components?
I ended up having to replace mine once I changed my shocks- I did them a few at a time (all I could afford) and kinda got ripped off. It might be worth checking into the price of a whole package/kit of polyurethane bushings for the front end before you start. The packs usually include the cont. arm bushings also.

Again-

ConGRATS on joing us-

JEEP!

I don't mind trimming actually.

And that's good to hear.

How hard is the install of one of these lifts?

Welcome to CF..... But on another note I wouldnt recomend on buying a used lift kit you dont know what it was put thru, but if you dont know some sights here are a few you can go to roughcountry.com rustysoffroad.com quadratec.com or just type xj lift kit on google an you can find a wide verity of lift kits for decent prices an there not to hard to install... but good luck

I have a budget of $800.

The rusty's is in good shape.I know how the guy treats his rigs,he doesn't beat them he drives them home.

If I get the rusty's for $300, I can buy a set of rims and also buy a new cd player, along with a new oil pressure gauge sending unit, and fix my headliner.

Dont be to picky with a small lift. There is not a whole lot of difference except you will want full leaf packs and maybe use that money for a good set of bilstein shocks.

yeah, that's what I figured.I'm on a budget but want full leaf packs, never liked add-a-leafs.
