Starting issue, maybe simple, please chime in

Hey everyone, here's my issue.

No Start. I turn the key, and hear the fuel pump and all the other accessories come on, but no cranking.

It turn the key in (R), (D), (2), or (1), and nothing comes on, no accessories, no fuel pump, nothing! (P) or (N) all come on, so I assume my Neutral Safety Switch is OK.

When I turn the key, in (P) or (N), the amp meter on my dash dips slightly, but not like when it is cranking, just seems like the fuel pump and accessories pulling a bit.

I turned the engine by hand, (socket wrench), so it's not locked up, and I don't think the starter is locked up either.

I turned the key on and held it on, in the start position, for the count of "30 Mississippi", then grabbed a hold of the starter, it was not hot.

I don't have a volt meter or anything, but before I go to the JY and pick up a new starter, I wanted to know if anyone might have a clue as to my XJs issue.

Does it have a Starter relay? My ZJ has one in the PDC under the hood and when removed or bad the starter won't engage when the key is turned in Park.

OK, In my Chilton's manual, it says I have one.

It says to have someone turn the key to start and listen for it to click, I will go do this and come back. Thanks for the idea!

Yeah post what you find out.

As dumb as it sounds, could it be a fuse? I had a somewhat similar problem, had to roll start but I knew I had a good starter, volt meter said the battery was fine. I'd replaced the serpentine earlier that day and unplugged the fan to get to it to the release, started the car with the fan out to make sure there wasn't any squealing and it shot two fuses.

Ol' Blue - It is clicking loud and clear.

UnExpected - really? wow, I guess I'll go check!

I don't see any bad fuses. I am going to pull the starter and try to just put juice to it and see if it is working.....of course it's raining outside, why wouldn't it be?

Got to the junk yard today. Found an XJ that they just pulled into the lot, no seriously...the day before. I don't know why it was scrapped, it was beautiful! The PO must have had one problem too many, it had a NEW starter in it, like still had the paper bar code tag on it! Cha Ching! then I finally got my headliner, and a new rear view mirror. If I had enough cash I would have bought the whole truck and brought it home and swapped out the interior, it was that nice! So sad to see it be stripped.

got it home, and in, in a few minutes, started faster and better than it has ever since I have owned it!!!!
