Default Starter and New flexplate issues

Just recently finished my motor swap, put in a new 4.0 along with a new flexplate and starter. Well jeep runs fine but takes awhile to start. (For being new) and makes an ungodful sound when turning over. Noticed today something is takin it's toll on the flexplate. Can't figure it out and I have found no similar issues online. Anyone have any clue?

No help here. In your shoes I suppose I'd try a different starter.

I guess I could, I have taken it off and tested it. Tested fine.

Also.. There are no actual teeth broken off from the flexplate.

He's meaning the chunks taken out of the ring gear at about 4 o'clock. Zoom in and it's fairly apparent.
Looks like the starter is improperly engaging the ring gear. Did you physically match the starter to the stock unit. Did you replace any shims that came off the stock unit?
Only time I see that kind of damage is from using the wrong tooth pitch/count on the starter and or ring gear.

It was a brand new (remanufactured) starter. No shims are needed or used on the 4.0s. So I haven't put shims or anything on. Also the flexplate is new. (Direct replacement) look identical. Could my starter still cause my jeep to start but also be improperly engaging?

It seems unlikely there is a problem with the flexplate. In your shoes I suppose I'd try a different starter. Being you just bought it they should exchange it easily enough. Agreed, as far as I know it's only Chevy that uses shims. Once in a blue moon mine will grind and spin, probably have a few chipped teeth, but yours being like that new doesn't seem right.

If you post up a link to a U-tube Vid....that's always fun.

Can anyone see the aluminum plate that goes between the engine and trans in the photo?

Nope, I took it off to see what was going on. Hence the two pictures.. Edit: thought you meant the cover.

I'll replace the starter today, if that doesn't work I will post a video. Thanks!

Well there you go. That plate would hold the starter out almost .1 inch! I put a caliper on mine. (see photo).... Great catch Cruiser!

Supper! That's good news. I got disorented with your photo, and saw that curved crescent mark on the flex plate where the gear rubbed. Figured Cruiser had a point that if was too close. OK, I see it now.

An issue with the starter Bendix then.
