Unhappy stalls when warm /decelerating

2001 jeep cherokee stalls when it warms up going down the highway it will sputter a little bit, then just stall seems to do it more consistently when you let off the gas. We're thinking fuel pump, but maybe crank position sensor? any ideas? Any way to pull the codes off this without scan tool (cant get to town to get one) it has the digital odometer, someone posted somewhere you could get codes to show up there? Anyone know what symptoms of crank positon sensor failure is? what about fuel pump failure. It will start good, may have a slight problem starting every once in a while but main issue is stalling out while driving HELP

1. You cannot pull codes on an 01 without either a scantool or a code reader. The key-on, key-off technique went away sometime in 1997

2. Test your fuel pressure with a gauge. Many big box parts stores will rent this to you. For yours, you should have 49 psi, plus or minus 5 psi. Your problem with extended cranking when cold sometimes is usually related to a failing "check valve", which is part of the fuel pump assembly, which is located inside the gas tank. Very common on your vintage.

3. Thermal (heat related) failure of the crank sensor is not uncommon, and if this problem happens ONLY when hot, this could easily be your problem. It is a very common sensor failure. Here is a good thread on the crank sensor, including how to test. However, with an intermittent problem, testing is not always conclusive. If you do end up buying one, buy it directly from Jeep. This forum and others have plenty of threads of people that have had trouble with brand new aftermarket crank sensors. It IS worth the extra money. Good luck!

had similar issue, stuttering, a popping backfire kinda noise from intake, acted like it was going to stall out out at a stop... o2 sensors. they aint cheap, so get it on a code reader (yes, as previously stated, the only way to pull codes)... i dont think the 2001 has a CPS, it would be a TPS and IAC valve. correct if wrong! but these are viable options, too. what about a tune up- plugs, wires, cap , rotor, etc...?

All Jeep 4.0 engines have both a crankshaft position sensor and a camshaft position sensor.

2000-2001 do not have plug wires, cap, or a rotor.....They have a coil-pack, distributorless ignition.

duh... i guess that one slipped my mind... haha. laughing at myself on this one. so, now that im tracking again, what about the coil pack? i guess the first question should be has it been on a code reader? and it doesnt sound like it has... so id say get to the nearest shop. they should do it for free.

Coded it last week and P1196 was the only code it was throwing so we put the new 02 sensor in bank 2 sensor 1. Issue with stalling happened after o2 sensor replacement but It really made apower difference until it stalls. Had lots more power on take off. but started stalling. Put old 02 sensor back in and it still stalled but had less power, almost like the new 02 sensor was making it run better therfore it needed more gas and fuel pump couldnt supply it. We've only had this Jeep a few months and the first thing we did was completly rebuild the motor cause it had really low oil pressure when we bought it. Has all new internal engine parts and various oter parts Got over 1000 miles since rebuild but now its having the stalling issue. But with new o2 sensor it seems to perform with more power if we can get the stalling issue figured out. we just keep throwing money at it. New fuel pump will be here later today hoping that fixes it, if not we'll try something else Hey by the time we're done it may be just like new!

i had a similar issue with stalling when warm, would take about 10mins of cool down before it would start again.

CPS was the culprit.

New fuel pump didn't fix it, there went 200.00 , but it looked like it needed internal filters anyway. Next thing we'll try is crank position sensor I guess, ordered scan tool it will be here tomorrow , see what the codes say. It doesnt have a problem starting, it even starts right back up immediatly after it stalls hubby says when it stalls its almost like the computer it shutting it down? Any ideas? Wish the scan tool would get here that would help alot.

autozone will rent you a fuel pressure tester as stated above that will save you 200 bucks next time...

While buying a scan tool is a worthwhile investment there will not always be codes even when/if your XJ is running weird/poorly. If the CEL lights-up then you will most-likely have codes to review. Your PCM may have been re-learning the new O2 sensor and may simply need more run-time. In addition to tjwalker's CPS recommendation, let me suggest a thorough throttle-body and IAC cleaning (and that you restore the new O2 sensor but bench test the old one and retain if okay).

Cleaned throttle body and iac, tested throttle pos sensor, it tested ok. CEL is on so were waiting for tool to get codes, Thats what was weird about it, it was running fine (though hubby said it didnt have as much power as it should) so we stopped at advanced an had them read the code (CEL light wasnt on at the time, but we later found a blowed bulb there) any way got code 1196 so we replaced that sensor, and now it stalls, at first it was at deceleration, now it seems to be at acceleration or under load, but it always starts right back up. If you drive it easy and dont get on or off the throttle to suddenly it might not stall at all Its driving us crazy, read on apost elsewhere that some jeeps have to long of screws in the PCM and its messing with some kind of ground or connection but that was for 98 Grand cherokee, so dont know if that applies to me? Hubby is very knowledgeable about cars but hes always been more into muscle cars and rods and all this computer stuff is driving us crazy. About to go back to driving the 1971 Javelin with nitrous and a supercharger to go get grocerys !
