Spline Conversion and Locker Question
I'm getting closer to finalizing my rig but want to settle all the details before I start shelling out some cash - I'm headed towards 30" Dayton Timberline or Firestone Destination muds (31s later on), a 3-3.5" RC, RE, or Skyjacker lift, and a lunchbox locker in the rear (front later on).
I want to focus on the locker right now since the lift decision will work itself out in time however input on anything is still welcome
I've read nothing but positive reviews about Aussie lockers however I own a '93 XJ with the 8.25 27spline axle in the rear and unfortunately... Aussie only makes lockers for the 29spline.
Would it be possible to convert my 8.25 to a 29spline and then use the Aussie? If so, would this be a simple task (requiring ~ no more expertise needed to install a locker) and not cost much?
Otherwise I was thinking about a Powertrax NoSlip as an alternative - $500 is about my limit for the locker so does the NoSlip justify the added $100 over the Lockrite?
Thanks for the help

In order to convert from 27 spline to 29 spline you would need to change the carrier and axle shafts. The labor cost alone to have this carrier properly set up in your existing case would not be worth it. Especially when you consider the fact that if you can find a 29 spline donor in a jy, it would be cheaper to purchase the complete axle assembly and swap it in. Search Craigslist and your local listings for someone parting out a 97-01. You should be able to find a suitable axle for around $100-$150.

like he said... buy another 8.25 with the 29 spine and take a half hour to put it in yourself... sell you old on craigslist and make your money back... in fact you could by the 29 spline and work on rebuilding it while its out... easier... then your jeep wont be down either!

Ok, I'll keep a look out for butchered XJs... I don't see too many in my area (in the past 6 months I've only seen 1 newer ZJ with all the good stuff taken and an 85 XJ)
If I don't get ahold of the axle would the Powertrax Noslip be a viable alternative? A buddy of mine got one a while back and likes his but I'm not sure what makes the Noslip $100+ more than the Lockrite other than it is quieter.
