Spindle nut
 

Anyone have a cool trick for taking off a frozen spindle nut? I tried a 1/2" breaker bar and 36mm socket and nearly bent the bar. I have it 1/2 apart and would hate to have to put it all back together to take it somewhere that has an impact wrench. I hope I don't have to chisel it off.

Have you tried putting a little heat to the nut? Map gas works.

Heat is about the only way you are going to get that sucker off. When i did my front hubs I soaked with PB Blaster over night and then use heat and an impact and it finally came off. Also remember you can losen it with the tires still on and on the ground.just don't take it off losen then hand tighten ..

Just go see somebody with a good impact gun and it will spin right off smooth as can be.

If its really on there, an impact wont do much.

OK I am replacing ball joints and wonder why it even has to come off? Can the axle and hub come out as one piece?

Yup, that's the method I used to save time. Remember though, if the hub hasn't been off in a long time, you may waste the bearing trying to remove it (assuming it wasn't anti-seized)....

OK then that sucker has a date with a sledge. Maybe then I can take it to a shop and have them get the nuts off.

woo hoo! Both axles popped right out with no problem. Left side has new ball joints and awaiting new brake pads. Now to tear into the right side. Axle is out next step is removing the knuckle. To get the hub out the best way is to back the 3 bolts out about 1 inch, then use a 13mm 12 pt socket on a short extension on the bolts and your sledge to drive the hub out. Do NOT hammer directly on the hub bolts, you will mess up the heads. A 3 lb hammer is your best friend.
