Default Happened to me twice

Probably bad speed sensor, it is electronic on my 92 and large gear connects to it from drive line.

Also check your fuses, but probably the sensor as mentioned above. A few weeks ago mine died and the next day started working again and hasn't given me problems since. Could be a loose wire somewhere...

a friend told me his xj one time the speedometer died for awhile untill he got up to 60 mph then it switched on and shot up to 60. Then his gas guage and temp guage died. maybe a lose cable or the cluster is messing up altogether.

BamaXJ, I agree you either have a loose connection at the Speed sensor or the Speed sensor is going bad. It is located on the backside of your Transfer Case. My 91 XJ has this problem, too. My Speed-O will randomly be dead when I go to drive my Jeep but, after a few minutes it pops to life. I know it will die eventually but, I'll let it go until it does.

My gauges will go on and off on occasion. Sometimes stays off for a period of time then out of no where will work again. I know the later XJs had problems with the plug on the back of the cluster and that dealers have a redesigned plug to fix the problem. I would assume the older XJs have a similar problem. At one point my gauges didnt work for quite a few months and I starting thinking about swapping them out for some Autometers..
