Default Speedometer not working

Hello all,
Just recently bought a 89 cherokee limited and the speedometer doesn't work. All other gauges operate as they should. I am nearly certain that it is cable driven. What is most likely the problem and where do I start?

It is cable driven.
Runs from the transfer case, up under the dash, to a black plastic doohickey and then to speedo.

Any idea on what I need to replace or adjust? I've heard of the plastic teeth getting torn off over years of wear and tear.

The gears are plastic and yes they can wear. It is also possible that the gear
is not completely seated. My speedo is cable driven and both of those things
have happened. So I would first pull the gear out, examine it, and if it doesn't
look chewed up, then put it back in all the way and see if it works. If not, maybe
you have a bad cable or the cable isn't seated in the dashboard cluster (I've
had that happen, too).
