spare tire on roof rack
Snowboarding season is almost over and I'm about to replace the racks with my roof basket. What's the best way to secure the tire without having to buy a yakima tire carrier that bolts through the tire? If you can't picture what I'm talking about, check out this link.

You can build one of those.
OR
you can fine a cheap tire carrier off the back of a Wrangler and bolt it to the basket rack
OR
you can tie down straps

I'd build it if I were you. I shouldn't talk though, I bought a mopar accesories one for $100 with a 31" mud tire. But I was gonna build one, couldn't pass that deal up though.

Is it that simple? Just one ratchet strap across the tire? Seems too simple. Ryan, do you have any pics of yours?

Yea I want to know to because I'm going to purchase a rack in the future and am more interested in thule than yakima but yakima has that carrier that seems rather convenient.

Thanks. Nice pics btw. It's good to see you're keeping your XJ dirty. Have you put that new winch to use yet? And you got some new rock sliders? Looking good!

I used 1/2 coil threaded rod and cast wingnuts and did it to the floor of my flat basket. But I don't have it up there any longer as that is WAY too heavy to mess with...
You can see the coil threaded rod in the middle of the tire.

me and a buddy of mine made one for the rack on his 01 pathfinder. we made a plate that sat up from the rack then just used a locking trailer hitch pin to secure it up there. its really simple but works awsome.
