Default somtimes starts.... sometimes dont!!

94 xj...starts when it wants... this wknd it started fine and it ran good trailing in the mountains for hours... got home and shut it off ... got in it later and then would not start ,the cluster, cd player, lights everything work except firing the starter it would even click.... so after a few attempts battery was dead so long story short replaced the bat had a spare pretty much brand new....cuz it would not jump ...just clicking still...so then took the alternator off and knowing that needed replacing,,, so did with brand new one.....then my starter was all of sudden not even clicking so figure it was under warranty still so replaced that to.also replaced positive battery post it was not in the greatest shape.....so after all that my jeep fired up like a champ ha was excited....then went town came back and same fu@@ing thing ha... but ya am i looking at possible a short somewhere? or i think its the whole positive bat cable ?? or even the starter switch?? but if itwas that would be doing that whole time right?? what ya guys think? 2marrow my day off prob will tackle the starter switch its like 10 bucks and also the positive cable cuz like i said just seems like starter is not getting juice, everything else is working fine.... any advice would be cool

CKP.. when it, cranks but no start again.. disconnect the CKP and re connect it and see if it starts.. if so plan on replacing it soon. It is located driver side rear of head, and is a 3 plug conenctor.

Are you talking about the CPS? AFAIK the CKP is located inside the distributor...

If it is an automatic, it could be the neutral start switch. Move the shifter thru the gears then try starting in park and neutral.

I would not just throw parts at it. You need to do some testing to identify the problem. First check is to eliminate the starter as a problem. You can do this at the starter terminals on the starter. Look for the red cable coming from the battery. Now, connect that terminal to the small terminal on the solenoid. If the starter/solenoid is good, the starter will engage and turn the engine. Be careful doing this as the engine will turn.

If this test is good, the problem is in the key starting circuit and you have to do a couple of tests on it.

Here is a picture of a starter. Connect the terminals with the orange lines. The starter should engage and turn the engine. Some use screw drivers or you can use a heavy gauge wire. You may get some sparking so wear glasses.

Make sure that your battery is good. You have to start with a good battery.
