Default something is loose in engine bay and making a clunking noise, but what ?

Here is the problem. I tried to isolate the noise but so far no luck. The issue is somewhat pronounced.

When I start the engine (while its cranking) there is a clunking noise. Sounds like there is something loose. Sounds like a metal to metal noise. You can also hear the noise when the engine is in park and idling.

When driving or in drive the noise is not there or not loud at all. The engine is working fine. but I want to make sure that this issue is fixed and does not lead to anything more serious.

Anyone had this issue before ?

Good advice Joe. Also, tap the flexplate with a hammer and see if it makes a "tinny" sounding rattle rather than a clear tone. Sometimes, not always, you can tell this way. JMO

It's a large circular metal disk with teeth around the outer edge that are engaged by the starter for turning over the engine. It is located where the engine meets the transmission. It is attached to the rear of the crankshaft with bolts facing forward in a small inner circle that is prone to cracking around these bolts, completely separating the flywheel causing noises similar to a knock. It has bolts that attach it to the torque converter facing rearward in an outer circle. That should explain it I hope.

That explains it perfectly , thank you !

From what I can hear it seems the noise is comming from the font of engine bay or under the engine bay ... but thats just my hear. I searched on the flex plate issue and it does sound like what I am experiencing.

Update: Issue is fixed. It was the flexplate. All 4 bolts were very loose. Took care of those and now the noise is completely gone. 20 minute work and no money invested i'm a pretty happy guy
