Default smoke out of defrost

Driving down the road today I switched on the heat and a minute later thick smoke started to come out of the defroster vents.I pulled over and yanked the neg cable with fire extinguisher in hand.Unplugged the blower motor checked wires and found nothing.Everything still works, although I didn't have time to check the blower motor before it got dark.
it was definitely something shorted it reeks bad.anyone ever heard of a blower motor doing this? I'll find out more in the light tomorrow, hopefully.

Yeah, I've seen this happen to some older rigs. The motor can short out and smoke like crazy. All the amps going to the motor thats "not" spinning is converted to heat, which melts things and makes smoke. Could also possibly be a wire that went south. Those things are small but make a HUGE cloud of smoke that is horrible. Just had that happen to me last summer.

definately burning and hot smell?

at first while i was reading i thought your heater core sprung a leak and that will fog up the inside, but it will not have hot electrical burning smell. it will have sweeter, coolant burning smell.

oh yeah it was something electrical, scared the crap out of me.I couldn't wait till morning went out and checked.Got power to plug, but no workie when I plug in the blower. My jeep sat for 4 years before I bought it and got it running,so all kinds of surprises keep popping up.Fun.

if you got power and ground at the motor, and no spinny, then the motor is bad, probably seized up and burned the motor. should be no big deal.

One thing to check is the blower motor resistor. If your blower works on high only when you check it the resistor could have gone bad and they will create smoke and lots of heat and melted electrical smell when it burns apart. It happened with my 94 dakota and i thought the blower motor had burnt up. Im not certain where the resistor is located on your 95, but im pretty sure its bolted in with two screws in the air/heater housing under the dash. One of the other guys here can probably put you on it pretty quick. Pull it out, and check to see if one or more of the coils are burnt apart. New ones at Oreilly's are around 23 bucks. They also list a blower motor for around 34 bucks. Good Luck!!

Make sure you dont turn the heater on before you check. Those things get crazy hot. I have never seen them smoke that much though. Maybe its a cherokee thing, the ones I have seen crap out just melt the winding thing out, but yeah it will probably just work on high speed if thats bad.
