Smoke

I recently got a 95 and the other day I warmed it up cause it was cold outside an when I went back outside smoke was pouring out from under the good and the interior was filled with smoke. I let it sit for a while and put some more coolant in. A few hours later I started it up again and drive to the store and it was fine. On the way back it died on me and when I got it started back up and back home the engine was smoking again and then coolant just poured out from it. Smoke was coming out of the intake. What could be the cause of this and how costly could the repairs be? I've had the jeep for a few weeks and really like it and would like to have it for a while

What kind of smoke, first off? White, black....what? Also, engine and mileage?

belvedere Dec 22, 2013 08:16 AM

Also, where exactly does the smoke come from?

Not to sound like an a$$ or anything. But if you just start to read this would you have any clue of what you are talking about. Not likely! Give some kind of details. Also you have a 95? You would be surprised that many people post on this XJ section and there Jeep isn't an XJ. Give some details so we can try to help you with your problem.

Sorry for the vagueness. It has 240,000 miles on it and its a 4L inline 6. The smoke is white maybe a light greyish color coming out from the oil cap and from the intake when I checked the air filter

I think the question here is where is your coolant leaking out from?

salad Dec 22, 2013 09:30 PM

Is the smoke getting into the intake via the CCV hose up front?

Have you done an oil change on this thing yet?

Realtimtoad Dec 22, 2013 09:42 PM

I was thinking about changing the oil tomorrow. I work twelve hour days and go in before the sun comes out and get out after it goes down so I'm gonna poke around some more when I can see better. A guy at work suggested seafoam in oil and then change oil and flush radiator. I did notice tonight under it when I got home it looks like it's leaking some oil too but not entirely sure since it was dark and didn't really feel like crawling under it at that time

My first thought was either a cracked head or a blown head gasket. I hope I'm wrong.

Don't drive it until the problem is diagnosed properly. Don't spend any money on it except for a diagnosis.

Yeah. Don't bother messing around with any SeaFoam nonsense, you need to find the problem before you try anything.

So I was takin it to autozone cause I couldn't find where to plug in the obd II and on te way it made a propping noise and a lot of smoke and died. I pushed it into a parking lot that I was in front of and since it started snowing I went to put the window up until triple a got there to tow and turned the key to far and it started up. I shut it right off. I popped the hood and there was coolant everywhere. I don't know for sure whats wrong with it but I think I'm going to be checkin craigslist for another mid 90s model or lookin for a rebuilt engine for the one I have. It's shaping up to be a wonderful Christmas ha

Why not just fix your cooling system? The engine might still be fine. You can't tell where it's leaking from??

Original poster: Your problem is not going to be stored as a code. Go to a real mechanic, not a counter clerk, and have a hands on diagnostic done.

Would you go to Walmart for a heart transplant?
