slow shift, slipping

slow shift, slipping
What will cause a slow shift from first to second gear? It also slips a little when shifting from first to second.

Well I just bought the jeep yesterday so I don't know too much about it. The transmission fluid had a dark color to it but it did not smelled burnt. I decided to go ahead and change the fluid but not the filter yet since all I had to do was pull a drain plug on the trans pan. The fluid looks good now but did not seem to affect the problem any.

Is it actually SLIPPING, or is it just a delayed, slow shift? Important distinction. Slipping is often internal in nature, whereas a delayed shift can sometimes be as simple as replacing the "throttle position sensor", which is directly involved with the shifting characteristics of the AW4.
So if the shift points don't seem right, suspect the TPS. If it is truly slipping, follow the recommendations below.
If the fluid is at the correct level on the dipstick and is red and doesn't smell burnt, you could try siphoning a bit out and adding an additive like Trans-Tune.
If that doesn't help, drop the pan and take a look at the filter; replace if necessary.
If the above two things don't help, shop for a different salvage yard transmission.

did you have the trans fluid changed with the machine that forces the old one out and the new one in? automatic transmission on a jeep takes 5 gallons. Replace the filter. don't cheap out. do it properly.

I just bought the Jeep and I haven't driven it more than a mile due to rear driveshaft vibrations, gotta get the slip yoke fixed, but it has a delayed shift from 1st to 2nd gear and sounds like it may be slipping slightly during the delay but all gears pull fine and all other gears shift fine. I drained 4 quarts from the transmission pan and refilled yesterday but I do plan on changing the filter soon. I am planning on getting the rear driveshaft fixed this week and then I can drive it somemore and get a better idea of what exactly is going on.

I got my rear driveshaft fixed yesterday and the transmission does slip slightly when shifting from first to second gear. The check engine light is on and the code is P0740 torque converter clutch solenoid circuit open. Got the light cleared but the trans still aint shifting right. Would caused this code?

im having the same issue right now, gone thru 2 TPS, now im thinking of replacing the MAP sensor, i dropped the pan, changed the filter and had one of those machines replace all the fluid, was just wondering if you had already replaced the MAP

No I don't think the map sensor has anything to do with the transmission. My next step will prob be the solenoids inside the trans.
