Slack in steering shaft

So my steering started to give like my belt wasnt tight on my 1992. I would turn and all of a sudden it would give then actually start turning the vehicle. After all the reading I figured it was the steering box. Finally had someone crank the wheel left and right with the, friction point in the center, and found that my steering shaft has a bunch of play. If you can picture it. The extension from the firewall comes to a joint. On the lower portion of the joint (steering shaft upper side) is a coupler. That coupler has two large ears off of it that contact the joint. Mine has a bunch of slack in it that allows the wheel to be turned an inch or two before it causes those ears to engage the joint. Anyone else had this problem or know the fix (beyond another shaft)?

There's a rubber isolation section in there...is the shaft turning before the joint responds, or is the joint itself broken? In either case I believe you have to replace that section of the steering shaft.

Thats exactly what went out. Replaced it with a JY shaft. Thanks for the input.
