simple nss question

99 cherokee just put in new nss. will the shifter be a little stiffer to shift. still starts and shifts just a little stiffer. Just want to make sure i didnt tighten up the bolt to tight
thanks

I put a new NSS on mine about a month ago and it was tight. It's more due to the nut for the selector than the bolts. Mine has loosened from driving it more the past couple days.

Tighten the collet nut to 62 lb-in (~5lb-ft,) and the adjuster screw to 15lb-ft.

It should not get any tighter to shift as a result of the repair, even if you overtighten the nut (although overtightening the nut is likely to damage the NSS.) At least, it never has for me (I've probably done dozens of them for people.)

thanks alot i will drive it around and see if it gets better

Mine was a bit stiffer after replacement , but simply loosened some because of use as the km's (or miles in your case) went along...no worries.

anybody know the size of the bolt that goes in the trans to hold the nss in place. mine seems to be MIA?

Roler 01-19-2014 02:22 PM

MIA?

dt1050 01-20-2014 05:51 AM

I took the nss of to clean it and found the back was cracked and missing pieces (full of sludge so must a been that way for a while) and not worth cleaning and putting it back on, so I put the nss under the hood. I have been replacing the floor so things have been getting moved around a lot.(+ my garage is a mess) I thought I put the bolt in the dash compartment, but I guess not.

so in other words I lost the bolt that goes in the trans and the nut that goes on the end of the nss. Maybe I left it inside the uni-body when I put the new floor on...

I should have made up some elaborate story so I don't sound like such an idiot.....but there ya go, I lost it.

Per the '96 parts catalog it's an M8x1.25x30mm bolt. Part number 83503714.

M8-1.25x30m/m, flanged hex head, torque to 15lb-ft (so any ISO Property Class is good - even 4.8.)

The nut, I believe, comes with your new NSS. Torque to 62 pound-inches (about 5lb-ft.)

Recommend using RTV on the screw threads for the adjuster screw, so you can readjust it at intervals without having to remove the screw and reapply. (You only really have to reapply RTV if you remove the screw entirely. Figured that out 25 years ago...)
