Default Side moldings faded

Like most, the side moldings on my 01 have sun faded from black to a mid-gray color. My OL would like them black again. (It is her DD.)

Mask them off and rattle can? Is there some other prep besides a good cleaning I should do first?
Any other suggestions or ideas?

If I drove it I'd take them off but she likes them on so I'll touch them up. Makes no difference to me. I'm currently in search of another XJ to put on the trails. That one won't have side moldings or fender flares or lights or glass or doors or....

Take a red or grey scotch brite pad to them. Takes off the oxidation, then apply back to Black or trim shine. Let me know

If your not happy with that use some Grease and Wax remover by duplicolor, and then spray paint them with either duplicolors bumper paint or trim and molding paint.

Here's a write-up I posted in the "Technical Write-Up/How To Section." Hope it helps, as it works very well.

Very nice write up! (Guess I should have searched... sorry.)

Yep! Though I got my bumper color restored without using the green pad, just the Back To Black in copious amounts. The door trim needed the pad first due to the rough texture.

the 3m pads did a nice job.

i used krylon "fusion" paint bomb on mine. it's made to bond to plastic. it's held very well. i prepped by cleaning with acetone.

There is a product made by Mothers called Back to Black, you can get it anywhere, just follow the directions and your results are awesome. Used this on many a wrangler that people wanted painted and everyone was very happy with the results. Just another option
