should i weld the rear spider gears on my xj
I have a 88 jeep cherokee, i want to lock the rear axle but i am on a very tight budget a lot of people i know have welded there spider gears and seem to be fine. I do not drive this jeep on the street trail only what are your opinions on welded axles...

i was thinking of locking mine and was talking to a guy... he has a good point... cost next to nothing to weld them up... he said they brake high dollar lockers all the time in his club... cheaper that if you tear it up when its welded... its still cheaper to go buy another axle and weld it up then to buy another locker and rebuild it... unless youve got custom fitted axles of course... but these jeep axles are a dime a dozen...

IF it is a d35, if you lock it, you will break it once you hit the throttle and get some wheel hop. If you have a d44 you can buy a mini spool for under 100 bucks.
ON a side note that axle where the whole center section was filled up... I bet the carrier breaks. All that heat will damage the host metal. PLus I want to see how much porosity and weld slag is contained in that poorly executed weld.
As for ppl in club breaking lockers. I broke a loc right once, but that is the only breakage I can confirm. I know a bunch of ppl running 40's and up not breaking lockers.
