Should I Pass?
 

Looking to purchase 1993 Cherokee, 162,000 miles and appears to reasonably cared for and driven in town for the most part. There are no obvious leaks, it drives well, and other than needing a good wash and vacuum all appears well.

Owner is asking $1500 but has agreed on $1000 offer, and no less. Here is the catch and where I need advice. The drivers side door is frozen shut due to a broken hinge. I have read about the problems with the hinges and I'm reasonably sure that is what the problem is. Don't know if the cost of repairing the door at a body shop would be worth the price of the vehicle.

Question is, should I pass on a XJ in good shape other than a the door issue?

if it's in wicked shape, maybe, but if you can't get the door open, how you gonna fix it?

The price is pretty decent. As long as the body and pillars around the door look straight go for it. I would check the linkage on the door, you might be able to pull the panel off with the door shut with minimal damage.

If it's not the linkage I would find a replacement door and cut that one off, then get to work on the hinge.

Pass on by and keep looking. If its meant for you to have that one it will still be there later down the road if you want it. To me your uncertainty answers you own question.

Even if both hinges were broken off you should be able to open the door even if it means the door would fall off in your hands. How does the door not open? Does it seem as if the locks and handles are all solid and functioning?

According to the owner, the hinge was loose for a while and one day he shut the door and it locked and he was unable to unlock it. The opening issue isnt from body damage. Because of the good condition of the vehicle otherwise, Its hard to pass up.

Shouldn't be hard to fix then, worst case you can always find doors for cheap, I picked up both complete passenger side doors for $25 each

If you are mechanically inclined and everything else checks out I would say go for it. As mentioned you can always remove the door panel from the inside to get access to the linkages or if worse comes to worse cut that bugger open or cut the top off and make a half door once you get it open.

93 is awesome I picked mine up for $1000 too and it had a screwed up driver door also. fixed. bfd :thumbup1:
