Should I do it?
I'm planning on getting a 3 in rough country lift (with new leafs of course) with some 31 in mud terrains. I won't be upgrading the gears so would this decrease my gas mileage dramatically? This is going to be my DD with the occasional wheeling. I was thinking of getting 31 in A/T to decrease the drag on the road or maybe going with 30 in M/T or A/T. What do you guys think?

If it's a DD I would go for the A/T's. Much smoother, quieter ride, and you have to weigh the amount of time spent on the road vs. wheeling.
If it's looks and off road performance you want, and don't care all that much about ride quality, go with the M/T's!!!!
As those above said.....gas mileage won't change dramatically, but road noise sure will.

Yeah MPG won't be dramatic but I agree I'd go with some AT's if it's mainly a DD. Something like the General Grabber AT2's would work nicely. If not get some MT's that are siped.

i say go with the 31" AT like BFG AT or GENERAL GRABER AT for a DD that your only wheeling every so often you would be happier with the ride and lower road noise, that general is like a copy of the bfg and like $30 cheeper

I have this setup and I love it, and my mpgs have only dropped 1-2mpg. For tire choice, I actually went with the 31"x10.50 Treadwright ATB's. The tires are amazing, and at the price you cant beat them. I started a long thread about them, and others have given their reviews as well.

Also if you don't want to get speeding tickets consider the difference in wheel diameter. i went from stock to 31" and got a ticket the same week. I think it winds up altering by 5 mph?

I've not had a problem with speeding tickets. Just go with the flow of traffic. Or find a local road that has one of those big digital signs that tells you your speed, compare it to your speedo reading and keep the difference in mind and you should be good.

Every jeep is different but when I am going 55 I am actually going about 62..There is a formula for figuring this I just can't remember it off hand.

Thanks for the input everyone.
I will prob go with 31 in BFG ATs then, because I will be doing a lot more daily road driving than wheeling.
Is the speedo gear a pain to replace? And how big are stock XJ tires?
