Do the rear seats fold down?

What kind of mileage can I expect from a stock 2001 4-door, I6, auto?

How much can they tow? I'd like to be able to pull a couple ATVs on a lightweight trailer. All in all, say 1500 lbs.

Should I add a tranny cooler or is the stock system efficient enough?

Is the 4WD system fully mechanical or does it rely on vacuum lines and other nonsense?

What axles are under it?

Did the rear diffs come with any type of traction device? I'd like to run a Lock Right or Detroit if not. I know on the old Chevys they require open diff, is why I ask.

yes the seats fold down, and they can do one better, they are quite easy to completely remove.
not great mileage, maybe 15-20 depending on how heavy you are on the gas.
can tow quite a bit if you get a strong enough hitch.
up front is a dana 30(in your case most likely a low pinion), and out back is either a dana 35 or a chrysler 8.25

Yes if your going to be towing, i would add an oil cooler. The stock ones with the tow package came with one.

No the Diffs dont have any sort of goverment locker or LSD... All open!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think ALL Jeeps (the unibody ones) have a max towing capacity of 5000lbs

From everything I've read, that sounds right. I'm nowhere near that though with two ATVs on a small trailer.

Some 8.25 Rear axle's have a Limited slip.
there is 2 Transfercase options.. NP231 and NP242 the 242 has 2hi/4hi/Full-time 4wd/4lo where as the NP231 has 2hi/4hi/4lo

A quick way to know if you are looking at a 8.25" axle is, it is completely flat on the bottom of the diff. and the cover has a rubber fill plug. (NOTE: 97+ XJ's with 8.25 have 29sp shafts. a very adiquitte axle for the XJ) where as the d35 is hardly strong enough for stock tires..

a stock cherokee will haul 5klbs, if it has a factory Hitch, it has a factory Tranny cooler

You can fit 30x9.50 tires on stock height, 31x10.50 with some fender trimming(and rubbing)

some other points: The automatic transmission in an XJ 4.0litre is the AW-4, this is a very stout Great transmission that with maintenance, should never let you down. it is NOT a chrysler tranny, please do not fill it with ATF+4 like stated from the dealer..

30's will fit without a lift but i'll be close.

A seeping valve cover gasket and rear main seal are all too common with the 4.0's. It's pretty much normal.

I could be wrong, but I think they came from the factory with a leaky valve cover. :)
I just replaced mine and need to strongly consider doing the main seal now. I am down to a small puddle instead of a medium sized one.
Just remember...Jeeps don't leak oil, they mark their territory. :)
