Shocks

Hello, I am new to the forum but a long time reader.

Its time to replace the shocks on the 98 XJ but seem to have an issue. I ordered 4 FOX replacements, but seem to have an issue with the 2 rear units (985-24-085). It seems the washers in the eyelets do not allow enough clearance to slide the shocks over the lower rear mounts? Any one have any idea what the issue may be? As far as i know the XJ is stock, and the shocks are listed as being compatible with my year.

Sent FOX a note but have not heard back.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

I have no direct experience with Fox, but it's not out of the question for a manufacturer to make a mistake on what fits what vehicles. I'd hang loose until you hear back from Fox, then take it from there.

Is an old bushing stuck on the mounts? Can you reuse old hardware? Got a photo of the issue?

Did you bolt the upper end in first? If so, you may or may not have enough clearance to work the lower eyelet of the shock over the stud. If this is the case, undo the upper end and do the lower end first. Mine are KYB, and installing the lower end first did the trick as the lower eyelet (the sleeve) got caught on the stud just enough to not want to slide on. I almost went for the hammer, but resisted in fear of breaking the stud. The shocks extended on thier own enough for me to mount the upper end without issue.

This is assuming youre having the same issue.

Just spoke with FOX. Apparently the metal washer within the rubber eyelet will have to be pressed out. This is why their website says modification may be required. The reason they gave was that the mounts are inconsistent from XJ to XJ.

Thank you everyone who responded.
