Default shifting into 4 wheel while stuck

what is the proper way to shift into 4 wheel when you are stuck.I got stuck in my driveway ,rain then froze, I was in 2 wheel so I tried to put it in 4 wheel with some trouble and when it did engage made a clunk noise and went.I,ve had no problems with it, I shift into 4 wheel on the fly with no problem but was wondering how to do it when I ,m stuck so I don,t do damage

You should be fine to go into four high while moving, just not if the rear wheels are going a different speed than the front wheels (ie spinning in mud). To shift into four low as long as you are stopped and have the transmission in neutral it should be fine.
