I haven't done it, but it has been posted here that you just give it a strong yank to get it to come off. Careful not to strike yourself in the mouth. And, aftermarket ***** have been used.

Haha I'll keep my face as far away as possible, and do you happen to know if the new ones have to also have a push button like the stock?

Not sure if it has to... Probably a good idea to keep a push button though, I know I've hit my shifter while doing 70 down the highway and without it I would have changed gears...

This guy gives a pretty good writeup on custom shift ***** using a grenade, could also be applied elsewhere. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/gr...-autos-104278/

yes, just pull. i like to put the shifter in 1st to do it.

yup, you need/want a button.

i've replaced my renix era shifter handle with a 97+ one. they're nicer to grab.
but i've also used a zj handle for a bit too.

but now i have a white 5spd hurst style from a pt cruiser that i want to retrofit. i'm thinking of being able to just push down on it to unlock the shifter.

I just don't really like how the stock one angles back at me, it just feels weird to me, and thank you for the link! It made it look pretty simple

Not sure what you mean by angles back at you... Mine is straight. Possible yours is just turned a bit?

No problem on the link, just ordered myself a dummy grenade off amazon to make one.

the 97+ has a bent lever thus having the handle bent toward you.

Im not to fond of that either. Always feel like Im gonna get my fingers mashed under it when I pull her down in low.
But I guess if it was straight I would bash my hand on the dash everytime I put her in park.

Just looked at mine. If it was straight it would contact or come damn close to the dash.
