Shift cable issues.
98 cherokee sometimes gets stuck in third. I saw the fix where you press the button, slide the sheath and rotate throttle linkage. It works great for a while but problem returns.
Is the sheath worn out ? Cable stretched ? Any accurate answers will incur excellent karma upon said answerers. Thank you.

TPS or the solenoids perhaps, but thats just a guess. Has the CEL been coming on? Have you checked the fluid level and condition? Any other driveability or shifting issues?
You can try shifting it manually to see if the TCM is messed up. Disconnect the TCM. It is a silver box with a purple label, facing your right knee, with the numbers 56041386. Put the shifter into the 1-2 position. The transmission will start off in 1st, but you have to let the engine hit 4000-4500 rpm or so for it to shift into 2nd, which it will do on its own. Move the shifter to 3rd and it will go into 3rd. Move the shifter to D and it will go into 4th. Atleast it should. What happens?
