A Shakee Cherokee
 

Hi All,
Just got a 96 Cherokee Sport 4.0L I6. Its my first one and having it makes me feel obligated to beef this jeep up. I will get to it next summer but there is one thing i need to fix first. MY car shakes after hitting a pothole around 55-70 mph. not just a shake but it seems like the wheels are going to fly off it settles down when i slow down. I replaced the shocks and the tires are on tight. SO would this be a front stabilizer issue? IS there a shock on all models of front stabilizer? is there a benefit to having one on it?
Also I am in need of new tires for the winter (i live in MN) I have standard size tires on it P225/75R15, does anyone have opinions on General Grabbers? Or do you have suggestions for good tires with some attitude?

Front stabilzers on xjs I have found make a huge difference,but on my truck makes very little,I would bet that a new stabilizer would cure your problem. I would also make sure ball joints,tie rod bushings are good also.

Jack it up and climb underneath with something like a crowbar or pry bar under your tire and put a little pressure on the bar when it lifts your tire see if it theres play in your ball joint if there is your ball joints are bad, replace them and the problem will go away.

Stabilizer will not cause the shake, they are there to smooth out the steering and mask small shakes.
Check your track bar mounts. Have your tires balances and see if that helps.
The tires being out of balance is the number 1 cause of shakes.
Ball joints rarely go out on Jeeps but i have seen it happen. I have about 200k on a set of ball joints on my 01 jeep and no play. i have 377k on my "utility" jeep on the origionals, but then again on my 94, i had to replace them at 98k.

to check the track bar, have the jeep on level ground, get someone to turn the wheel side to side and watch the tack bar mount, see if it moves any.
Then check your tie rod ends. check for l/r movement "rolling" movement will be normal.

i have 235/75/15 on mine, and no tire rub. and its got a nice ride. i have goodyear radial wranglers. their my favorite so far. good offroad too

The Goodyear wranglers are a good, long lasting tire. The BFG T/A KO is what i run. I like the look and performance of the tire, just hate having to have them balanced so often.

i jacked it up and tried to see if there was play in the ball joints, test was negative, no play.
if its my track bar, is it "pricie"/ easy to fix?

I have had to take my 92 back and have the tire guys rebalance because of their not getting them right. Sometimes a front one will be off 1/2 ouce because they rush through to fast. Of coarse I'm running original wheels on Michelin m/s. Wheels must be right on (balance). p.s, It is where I bought the tires.

At the speeds that you're saying, it sounds like more of a tire balancing or wheel alignment issue. I'd have the tires rebalanced and get an alignment done and then check back in. Your ball joints have to be in absolutely terrible shape if you're experiencing that much shaking.

As for tires, I had a set of BFG AT's in the 235/70R16 variety for about 30k or 40k miles (can't remember exactly now), and they never had any balancing issues. They wore really well, and I absolutely loved them. I also put about 30k on a set of 30x9.50R15 Bridgestone Revo's, another great tire - highly impressed with the on and offroad.

hey thanks guys for the help. heres the update (got it all fixed this weekend) turns out the issue was the front stabilizer shock and the front passenger rod end. in addition to getting that replaced turns out I was driving without rear brakes. I drove with my kids in the jeep. there was brake fluid caked on the calipers, big mess.
I ended up firestone destination a/t 235 75/15 tires, they look pretty sweet. there are no more shakee situations while driving so I am happy
