I recently started my 1999 4.0 Cherokee after it started the engine screeched and a poof of smoke came out i shut it down and opened the hood. I found that the serpentine belt was ripped. I bought a new belt and replaced it according to the Haynes manual. After the belt was on I started the jeep but the belt didnt move and the engine does turn over. I think i did everything right but I'm not sure now. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Pull the belt back off and check, by hand, to see if all the pullies spin freely. Replace the pulley or part that isn't allowing the pulley to spin freely. Could be an idler pulley, water pump (not likely), alt, p steering pump, etc...

had a similar problem, engine cranked slowly, when it started it screeched to high heavens, smoked like crazy and the belt eventually snapped.......found out the pulley on the alt siezed up....replaced alt and belt...easy breezy beautiful
