Default Select gauges not working

So I was helping my buddy do some routine maint. on his 98 cherokee today. We replaced the battery cables and the positive lead to the fuse box. After doing this the gauge started acting speratic. Sometimes no gauges work, sometimes the volt, fuel, and temp will work. Nothing else works at all now. I have researched the loose connection in the dash, not the problem. Any other ideas?

Try just removing the battery ground cable at the battery for about five minutes, reattach, then try running the motor again. If all the instruments come back, fine; if not, try removing the positive cable from the battery and touch it to the battery ground post for about 15 sconds, reattach the cable, then turn your headlights on, then off. Try running it again to see what the instruments do.
