Vehicle is 1986 Cherokee with 2.8L V6 engine and tow package 5 Spd Tranny.
I thought I would be smart and replace the rear main seal on my "new" engine. Managed to severely scratch the surface of the crank where the oil seal seats when my ***** slipped. Now what? I was thinking of turning the engine over with a big 1/2" drill and trying to use emery cloth to sand out the scratch, but worried I will then have a reduced diameter which won't seal.

The good news it is not where the bearing seats. You can use emory cloth just enough to reduce or remove the scratch. How deep is the scratch? I have used emory cloth on bearing journals but they were not very bad.
You have actually started it and made sure it leaks right?
