Default runs hot idling at a stop

i know there is alot of these but it is easier to post than to look it up i hope running hot at a stop light or in a drive thru have changed the thermostat put in a new radiator - clutch fan looks good at a idle but havent checked it after it has warmed up water pump not leaking at peep hole i guess it can only be water pump or clutch fan any info thanks

almost definatly your clutch fan. if its staying cool while your driving the speed is moving air through the radiator and the water pump is still circulating. but when you are at a stop it depends on the clutch fan to pull air through.

My suggestion would be replace whatever u haven't.

#1 cause of temp creep at IDLE is the fan clutch. Cheap and easy to replace.

That being said, a water pump is inexpensive as well and should be replaced if long in the tooth.

What is the temp it's running at? What size thermostat did you replace it with? Just trying to figure out what you are saying is hot. Yesterday the outside temp was above 85 and mine was sitting at 200 at stop signs and while driving it lowered to about 190 and that with my 190 thermostat and new water pump changed just before winter kicked in.

Where do u find a 190 t-stat? What brand?

Factory stat temp is 195. No need to deviate for a stock XJ in 99% of driving conditions.

well if you are using the ac when this happens the elect fan is not coming on.
