running like crap
Hi All. I have a 97 xj sport, 5sp 4.0L.
I usually have to crank it over twice for it to start, or at least turn the ignition on once then twice and it will start. It runs fine for about 30 to 45 seconds at idle, or until i'm about at third gear then it bogs down. if I try to accelerate it keeps bogging down until you hear a muffled pop and then it seems fine. Now here is the weird thing. If I shut it off for about 5 minutes and restart it, the above happens again. I have changed plugs, cap wires, both O2 sensors, tps, cleaned IAT, cleaned the other sensor on the throttle body by the tps, Checked for vacuum leaks, Cleaned The ground strap at the back of the engine and sanded the ends before reinstalling, and the battery is good. I am almost to the point of taking it to the dealership. Any help would be appreciated. |
I had the same problem. it turned out to be a bad fuel pump. it is located in the gas tank and can be removed and changed without dropping the tank. it made a world of differance to my 91 XJ when I got a new pump. I understand the fuel rod bleeder is a good place to test the fuel pressure. it should be around 30PSI, mine was that and then it would drop and come back up making my engine go nuts and me also....maybe this will help you.
