Running hot
 

On my 95xj when i use my air conditioner it runs hot and bubbles from the resivoir. When i'm not using air it is ok. Tomorrow i'm going to check the electric fan. What else could it be?

clutch fan, plugged rad, bad pump/ t-stat, lack of maintenance

Also check your a/c pulley for the bearings being shot. I had to replace mine. Found the kit on ebay, new coil & bearing, runs great again. It was putting a ton of resistance into the serpentine belt.

I had/have the same problem on my XJ. I had a broken mechanical fan shroud so I just replaced that yesterday and sadly the weather cooled down from being really damn hot so I don't know if it worked but I will update if I notice a difference. Definitely run the engine and watch the fans with the AC blasting to see if they are running at a constant pace and not making unusual noises. If anything AC related is all ok then I'd check to see if you have enough oil in the engine and if the air intake is in good shape and if the o-rings in the engine block are ok because it could cause immense heat to escape from the Sparks going off and gas burning. Just my two cents.

Ok my electric fan is not working, i tested the fan and its working so its the temp swith that tells the fan to turn on. Any ideas where it is located? Its a 95 xj 4.0.

The temp switch for the electric fan was on the earlier closed cooling system XJ's I believe.

Your electric fan is controlled by the PCM and the thermostat. Check the contacts on the harness to make sure they are clean.

My electric fan on my 92 was not working so I unplugged it, hit the contacts with compressed air and contact cleaner and plugged it back in. Worked like a charm.

Also you really should check your cooling system - I flushed mine last week and it was horrifyingly bad.

Check the fuse box. There should be fuse for the fans and the fuse box diagram should be in the manual somewhere with a list of what each fuse leads to.

Ok my electric fan is working good so next the thermostat. How do i tell if the fan clutch is bad? Water pump is good. One more thing it is missing the fan shroud for the main fan, would that cause to run hot?

Definitely get the fan shroud. If that solves the problem,good. If not then replace the clutch fan. They wear out gradually.

I got a brand new fan shroud from car-parts.com for around $18. Your jeep should still run cool enough without it though so I would not count on it fixing your cooling problem. If your fan clutch spins freely after your motor warms up, that is a way to tell if it is bad. I would replace it anyway to eliminate it as a source of your cooling problem.

Drive the car, warm it up and then do the free spin and paper test. AKA take a piece of paper, fold it length wise a couple of times and stick it into the fan while the engine is running. If the paper is able to slow down or stop the fan, its bad. The free spin test with the engine off but it doesn't always tell you if its bad.

Never a good idea to stick anything into a running fan,
1. It's unsafe & you could damage the radiator and or your hand/arm, etc. in the process.
2. It makes a mess.

Just forgo the filet for lunch and instead spend the $30 on a new fan clutch. :thumbup:

Your choice. As long as you aren't an idiot its perfectly safe. Just don't be that idiot and stick a screw driver into it...

So it started to make a loud noise and noticed this piece of metal behind the idler pulley. You can see metal shavings. This could make it run hot right? So i am going to replace it but what are the tourqe settings? Also are there any guides on how to relace it?

You should replace it but it won't make the engine run hot. Ive always just done good-n-tight.
