running and driving questions?

Ok so bare with me folk just a few questions and wondering peoples thoughts in a few problems I've been having.....the other day I was driving and my abs light came on when I stopped at my friends to pick him up and start my jeep back up it was off...now today I was driving to get coffee with the wife and my check gauges light came on and I noticed my voltage gauge had spiked to 19v so when I stopped at the post office to drop my mail off and start my jeep up again it had a hard time starting.....I've never replaced the battery or the alternater so I'm just curious as to what you guys think....it ran and drove fine after the post office getting coffee and back home...thanx guys in advanced!

The two sound unrelated, but the timing is pretty close.. Maybe a loose or shorting wire? The wiring can get a little funky on jeeps, they are notorious for weak harnesses. I'd say start by checking battery cables and ground wires. It could be gauges are just messing up, but you said it was hard to start after voltage spike, so I'm prob wrong... If your alt and/or battery were bad, I think you'd have a low voltage issue, instead of over, not that load testing is a bad idea! Idk, start with the basics like wires and connections, check fuses and relays and maybe end up checking wiring behind instrument panel. Careful when tearing into dash: it's the easiest vehicle to pull apart and access, but in doing so, the airbags can be tripped!! Disco the battery before tearing into dash!!

Awesome answer man thanx for the lead ill start with that stuff and let you know if I found anhthing

Yeah, start with simple stuff like the connections at the battery and where the ground wires connect to the body. Then move on to terminal connection blocks. Have you done any work to the Jeep recently? That might be an area where a problem originated too.

i have this same problem right now. my jeep did the same thing to me.my check gauges light came a few weeks ago,but hasnt come back on since.also i've had this hard start problem for almost a year now. way longer than my gauge spike episode.

it seems that whenever i fill up it will have a hard start at somepoint in the day. then be fine all week till i fill up again.

no ces light....its weird. i just went through all my grounds a few months ago. but there was one that i could brake loose. felt like it would break. i guess i should start there.
