Also, diesel oil is supposedly better with flat tappet cam systems like the I6. It helps with component wear because it has a better ZDDP package.

A lot of people also speculate that catalytic converter wear due to ZDDP is only a concern if you are burning oil, but I've not researched it enough to know which argument is true so I won't be pointing anyone into either direction.

Yep, 10W30 is cheapest available so makes sense that's what a dealership would use.

5w30 is the same price actually, and why would they put 5w20 in some of their vehicles and 10w30 in others if cost was the issue, if they decided to use 5W30 and the price was more they would just jack up the price of the oil change. in my opinion and the makers of the engine you are using 10w30 is the way to go for most conditions if not 5w30 when its really cold. they dont recomend 10W40 because its not what made the engine run at its best and its longest during all their countless testing hours.if you didnt know the 5.7L hemi for example knocks like a SOB if you dont use 5w20 because it was made for 5w20 and the same goes for the 4.0 it was made to use 10w30 or 5w30

So here in Nashville, TN the late winter/spring can be unpredictable: some days we get single digit weather; most days it's in the 30's and 40's; and sometimes it goes up into the 50's and 60's, all without warning or pattern.

With such sporadic weather, how will Rotella T6 5w-40 handle in the I6?

Also, when using a Purolator PureONE filter, should I add more oil to compensate for the larger filter size? If so, how much?

I use 10w-30 high milage oil.

Instead of using diesel oil why not dump some GM EOS or ZDDPLUS with your recommended oil? Its got all the zinc you need.. I use 10w-40 with ZDDPLUS on my big block chevy.

bought my xj with 80000 from a dealer and they just changed the oil right before i bought changed it to amsoil 0-30 full synthetic and amsoil filter after 1500 miles and ran 27000 miles(yes 27k) on it with no power loss pressure difference or mpg. got it tested and was practically as good as it was brand new, most likely could have done another 5000 on it. engine runs smoother then ever and is fully warmed up in about 2-3 minutes at most even on the coldest days

While that may be true, the SAE weight prescribed for an engine depends entirely on it's construction, eg. the size of the oil passages, the clearances at the bearings, etc. You cannot compare someones results on their engine to your completely different engine. They are built completely different, and respond differently.

Using 40 weight on an engine designed to lubricate optimally on 30 weight will only increase pressure and decrease the flow of lubricant to vital parts. Remember it's not the oil pressure the lubricates, but the volume/flow.

I highly recommend PureOne filters also - good choice.
I dont think it matters, My DD has 241xxx and its had 10W40 its whole life.

While my trail rig has 213xxx and has gotten 5W40.

Both have yet to have a compression/bearing problem.

On another note, just switched from Quaker to Valvoline in my DD.
