Rotella T6 5W-40 and Purolator PureONE in '97 XJ?
Hey, Jeep peeps, it's about time for an oil change (more successful than the last one, I hope: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/adv...o-97-xj-66434/) and I was thinking about using some Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic with a Purolator PureONE filter.
My '97 XJ Country has 190,000+ miles on it and is my daily driver. It has a slight knock, some grumbling under the cabin, a little vibration in the pedal when braking, some sluggish acceleration and--according to my mechanic--a few small leaks, though it holds oil fine.
I live in Nashville, TN, which is unpredictably snowy/icy cold and mild-to-warm in the spring.
What are your thoughts on the combination of Rotella T6 5W-40 and the Purolator PureONE?

I run generic syn 5W30 in mine. Mine cold the oil pressure is at 70ish, and hot idle almost 30, when revved at all over 50 psi. I haven't had mine long enough to do a UAO yet, but when I do change i'm gonna go 0W30 to see if I can bring my oil pressure down a but, if not then onto syn 5W20.

Purolator Pure ONE is a very good filter.
I've done a fair amount of research on filters and this is the one I've been running. They aren't that expensive and provide excellent filtration.

i do not recommend 40 weight oil in our engines. The viscosity is too high to properly lubricate the engine.
5w-30 only.

I highly recommend PureOne filters also - good choice.

no advantage of 10W anything, thick at startup. for some reason some peopple think older engine still need lots of zddp, and really they don't.

The level of detergents and other additives is higher for diesel, to combat the higher soot levels of diesel engines and take advantage of the difference in the catalytic converter in diesels. In a gas engine, diesel oil's greater concentration of detergent, or scrubbing agent, can remove manufacturer's deposits on the cylinder wall that help seal the combustion gases. This can lead to smoking inside the engine, which can in turn damage the catalytic converter.
The ZDDP content is also a concern, as the high levels in diesel oil will destroy/clog a catalytic converter very quickly.

My owners manual calls for 10w30 above freezing temp. And my jeep does not have a cat on it as we dont require to have them here.
But I think i'll stick to just regular oil. Possibly a high milage oil?

5W30 is a better oil to use for start-up wear. The lower the first number, the quicker the oil gets flowing to critical engine parts.

I think I will probably switch back to 5w on the next change and just continue to add when needed

I stick with the m1 synthetic but I have heard the t6 is great in the inline6 motors. Espically if your in cold climates. I feel if it's regularly below 20 degrees you will see the most benefit from this. Not sure if that's a regular occurance where you are though.

I agree that the Pure One filters are great. They have similar effciency to the Mobil 1 filters at a much cheaper price.
I run Rotella t6 5w40 and a PureOne filter. I wouldn't use a 10w30 or 10w40 oil since the most wear occurs at start up.
