Default Roof Racks???

Looking to purchase a roof rack for carrying spare tire and Hi-Lift Jack. Has anyone had any experience with the JC OFFROAD unit. Seems like a good deal $300 includes tire mount and HiLift mount) compared to the Garvin sold by Rocky Road Outfitters at over $600 with mounts? I think I would much rather mount to the existing OE rack rail rather that the gutters. Input or suggestions needed.

You are better off using gutter mounts than the original rails strength wise. I had my spare mounted on my OE roof rack and it was too much for it. Pulled one of the screws through the rail.

Is it true the gutter mounts are stronger than the factory mounting rails? I thought the factory rails would distribute the weight better.

yeah id say the gutter mounts are stronger the roof racks are relativley flimsy just hout out and press down on the center of yours and see how much the flex and then try and bend the gutter

There's no hardcore proof that that gutter mounts are stronger than factory mounts. Now factory bars could be a weakness.

true.

ive had 300+ pounds on my surco with the mounts on the factory rails no problem. the mounts done flex, the rack does. ive used it as a shooting platform for video and photos with me standing on it

I like the looks of the Surco Racks but I did not see where they offered a tire mount. Also its the only aluminum one I've seen.
