rolling up front when turning
Hi all this is my 3rd xj in the running and I've had a few little issues with this one and the major at the moment is that when turning at slow speeds and this only tends to happen on smooth surfaces, the front wheels feel as though they are rolling, this happens only when im turning full lock either left or right, another issue im having is the front diff seems 2 all ways be engage it feels like its still in 4x4 as when i take off all the power isn't transfered 2 the rear and none of my dash lights are coming on indicating my t/c is in gear.could it be a problem with my t/c? any advice would be great as im rather stumped on these issues here

Sounds like you may have the 242 T-case.My '98 does the same thing from time to time & it has the 242.
When he says "rolling" I think he means "walking".
My dad had a CJ-7 that was full time 4x4 & it "walked" BAD in slow speed, tight turns.
This is just a guess.

I have the NP242 as well and notice this when pulling into a parking spot.
Check your upper control arm bushings and tighten if necessary. This helped mine, but didnt get rid of it completely.

The front axle in any vehicle with a solid front axle is a full floating axle. So yes, youe d30 front axle is full floating.

I also have the same issue. Do you mean that even though you are still turning the tyres drag forward on the ground for maybe an inch? This could happen a few times depending on how long you are turning for. I have noticed that due to this the front tires wear considerably quicker than usual.
I have been told that my particular issue is caused by bad axle u joints.

Yes that sounds exactly right.
I haven't replaced mine yet, I was going to but my heater core has decided it wants to spray coolant everywhere so I need to fix that before I can drive it again. Or at least bypass it.
I did spray wd40 on them a while ago just to prove the theory. Not sure whether this was a bad idea or not but they didn't seem to bind anywhere nearly as badly for a day or two. Mine look like they have been there since it left the factory so I'm sure they'll need replacing anyway. Good luck with the fix whatever it turns out to be.

I don't know what you mean by the tires are "wobbling", but to check the front u-joints do this: jack up the front axle, turn the wheels full lock and try to rotate the tires by hand. I had a problem with mine where the steering wheel would jerk back and forth a little as I straightened out from a turn. I was doing something else with the front end jacked up and found that the front u-joints were bad because when I was rotating the tires by hand at full lock they would bind and release every 180 degrees.
