I've got an 88 cherokee with a 4.0 6cyl with a little over 250k miles on the clock and it's time for a new engine. I don't really know the prices but how much would it be to buy a new or used engine and have it put in? Maybe a new trans as well because it's slipping and on it's way out. Thanks in advance!

You'd be looking at about a grand for a reman'd engine. The tranny could probably be found at a salvage yard for a great deal in great shape if you know what to look for. Having a mechanic drop it all in for you would cost a pretty penny; would be better if you did it yourself if you have the facilities and the know-how...

Unfortunately I couldn't do it myself because of lack of tools and an engine hoist, I'm thinking around 2 grand to get one and have it put in does that sound about right?

Someone I work with just had this done. They did engine swap, new oil pump,gaskets and tuneup parts. Close to 3 grand

just go to a jeep dealer (or a mechanic that does alot of jeeps) and talk to the actual machanic, and i am sure he could make a deal with you. when i blew my motor in my 88, i picked up a H.O. 93 motor for $700 bucks, then got the jeep dealer to drop it in for 400 bucks labor! so just talk to someone and i am sure you can get a good deal.

I recently saw Chrysler factory replacement motors for $1500 to $1800 dollars somewhere, without accessories. Maybe direct from Chrysler, cant quite remember right now. Im sure I or anyone could find it with a little detective work on google.

But, lets not jump the gun. Just because your engine has high miles doesnt mean you need a completely new one. Its really not THAT hard to rebuild it yourself, and its DEFINITELY a lot cheaper. Also, salvage yards have motor VERY cheap and reasonable, sometimes with warranties. My buddy picked up a motor for his Ford Focus recently for right around $500 complete, with 65K on it and a 6 month warranty. It piqued my interest and I checked out if they had any 4.0's for my 99. They had 3: One had 45K for $795, one had 75K for $585 and the other one had like 98K on it and they wanted like $450ish (cant quite remember).

Either way, just because you have high miles I wouldnt start thinking you need a complete replacement. AND if you know its been abused (because youve abused it) I say run it until something DOES go wrong, all the while hunting down a salvaged one, searching prices and looking at rebuilding yours all the while putting away money for when the time comes.

Thanks for all the insight guys, I'll definately start looking and asking around more for deals or even used engines. Also the reason I need to replace the engine isn't because of the high miles it's because I blew a water pump in the middle of the desert and severely overheated it and it warped the heads and caused a lot of internal damage and now it barely runs even after replacing all the gaskets and cleaning all of the fluids out. I hope I can find a deal under 2 grand for a decent engine and drop in!

Thats a bummer. Yeah man, spend an evening looking around on the net and calling salvage yards. If you know how to rebuild an engine, you could probably spend under $1K total (donor and rebuild kit) and have a completely rebuilt "new" motor.

I watch a co-worker let his son have a shop replace a motor for around $3K cause the kid was dumb. idk who would pay 1700 for a 60K motor but anyways.

A good junkyard motor will do fine and be cheap. If you have basic hand tools you can change some seals, water pump, and clean it up before you have a shop drop it in for some extra piece of mind

Yeah I've actually been looking around at some remanufactured motors around 1k to 1.2k but tomorrow I'm going to call around for some donor motors from salvage yards for something good under 80k miles. I'm hoping to find something under a grand so I can keep a little extra cash to replace or rebuild the transmission as well. Thanks again for all the help guys!

I payed $250 for an engine and trans for my 96. Borrowed a hoist.

Safely I spent less than $500 with new gaskets/fluids/plugs/wires

You can get a hoist for $150ish on Craigslist. No pther special tools needed.




Hardest part would be finding a renix 4.0 that runs and is low miles
Maybe find a wrecked 91-2001 and do an H.O. Swap?

Or do what I did, picked up an XJ with bad tranny and good motor for $500. Sold the tires for $200, rims $100, diffs a $100 a piece, $200 in other miss. parts. Saved the wing windows and full instrument cluster and basically a free motor. When the leftovers go to the crusher that will pay for the gasket kit.

I'm going to keep looking around for engines/xj's with a good engine for the next month or so and see what I can find
