Ok, I have a friend that has an '88 XJ that starts and dies. Also, he says he can keep it running by pumping the gas pedal, but if he keeps the pedal steady, no matter the RPM, it will stall and die. He swears its an "air flow problem", but I don't think Chrysler has ever used a mass air flow sensor other than for secondary air injection. Anyways, what special points should I pay close attention to? Should I look at base engine concerns? Fuel pressure? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Shoot I can't remember the name but I had this problem it was a small part that I had to wire brush the he'll out of because the contact points on it were really ****ty. That solved it instantly. If I can remember later I'll post it for you.

under the hood on the driver side fender near the air box there is a ballast resister check the contacts and fiddle around with em

Yeah I would start by checking the fuel pressure. Maybe regulater? And yeah they don't have an mass air sensor, they have an Map (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor up on the firewall. Check that and the vacuum line that goes from it to the throttle body.

I like starting at the fuel pressure, I had a similar problem and replaced $250 in marginal sensors and a bad idle air stepper motor only to find I had a loose hose clamp in my gas tank.
