Default Removing under-hood light

That little light under the hood of my XJ has been acting up for a while. I'd like to pull it apart and make sure the switch is clean and the bulb is secure, among other things. What I can't seem to figure out is how to get it off the hood. From looking online, it appears there are tabs that secure the light to the hood, but I'm concerned about breaking them when I try to pull it off.

Any pointers how how to do this? Just pull straight back and hope for the best, or is there a trick to it?

It's a 17 year old piece of plastic, if it breaks I wouldn't cry too much over it. This is a much better option, probably won't break even if you run over it. Handy for more than just light as well.

Those tabs can break, but my light came right off. I thought maybe it would slide off somehow. I was wrong, but whilst sliding it back and forth trying to figure out the catch, it just popped off in my hand without breaking anything.

I had to remove mine altogether because it was in the way of my cowl intake. Someday I'll replace it with one of those neat retractable ones.

Thanks. Just pull straight out?

If I break it, this one seems to be about the same.
