Removing stock coil springs without spring compressor?
 

Does anyone have a procedure for removing stock coil springs and installing new ones without a compressor?
Maybe remove lower control arm and some of the steering components?

Be very, very careful doing this. Take every possible safety precaution. Seriously consider hiring a professional front end mechanic to do this.

If that spring gets loose, it can kill you deader than a doornail. Instantly.

Jack stand under "frame"
Remove shock, sway bar links, and lower track bar mount.
Drop axle and remove spring.

I just removed my stock front springs this exact way. I also dropped the lower control arms... (to get the new springs in)

PITA. The FSM says it can be done by disconnecting the Lower Control Arms, but once installed you are going to have one hell of a time connecting LCAs back up with the new tension of the new springs. I tried it for a while and gave up, got the spring compressors and did it that way. Plus having to disconnect the other things makes it easier to use the spring compressors.

And like FireStorm says, be very very careful if using the compressor.

They don't call it a "come along" for nuthin... :D

From Haynes Manual:
1. Raise and support front chassis on jack stands; remove front wheels.
2. Remove and support front driveshaft; be sure to mark orientation with yoke.
3. Support axle with floor jack (one on each side is preferable) and unbolt lower suspension arms.
4. Unbolt stabilizer bar links and shock absorbers at the axle.
5. Disconnect track bar at axle.
6. Separate steering center link from pitman arm.
7. Slowly lower axle until springs are fully extended.
8. Remove spring retainer and spring.

Do the reverse for install.

If your springs have any cracks in them they can break even if you use a spring compressor.

Be careful!

I used a lift and tall stand. the damn thing jumped out on its own in literally 30 seconds. getting it back in with the puck on it required a large pry bar. all in all I think we had a total of 4 minutes in removal and installation of both front springs with pucks.

So no compressor needed if I remove the lCA.

dude seriously........ calm down. the stock spring has 20 lbs of compression at full droop with all components attached.
if parts i listed are disconnected the spring will have 0 lbs of compression and fall right out.
its not a strut assembly. its a floating coil spring in an xj. it wont fly out and kill a bus load of kids going to sunday school.

i cant believe i was just driving through the woods and was attacked by the ruthless coil spring.... not once.....but twice! (sarcasm)
