Removing Instrument Cluster

I'm removing the dash from my 1987 XJ to replace a bad heater core. I've been following this link:

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/dash-removal-35444/

So far so good, until I got to pulling out the instrument cluster. I removed the six screws and it moves forward but it seems like something is keeping it from coming out. Feels more like whatever it is is on the right hand side behind the speedometer.

I didn't think I should pull too hard. Does anyone have any advice on this?

Also, if you know another way of getting at the heater core, without taking out the speedometer, etc. Let me know.

I'm stuck on this for now. Thanks for your help!

yeah, tip the top towards you and it will come almost all the way out then it will hang up on the dash opening. at that point, just pry it on out. nothing will break trust me. lol. done it to my 95 4-5 times and my 93 twice.

I would wait for someone to chime in with a cherokee from your year group. Isn't it a mechanical speedo cable on the back of those older ones?
I think you have to reach around and twist it to disengage it. I've not done it, but I think I remember breaking one at the junk yard trying to pull it out. (plastic maybe, but it broke for sure).

You're right on that. I pulled it back enough to see the cable. Reached way up under the dash and unscrewed it. Cluster came right out.
