Default Remote / Keyless Access

Just bought a used '98 Cherokee Sport and the seller did not have a remote entry controler and didn't know if the vehicle had a factory installed remote system.

Did all "Sport" model Cherokees in 1998 come with factory install keyless entry systems ? How can I determine if mine has a keyless entry/ alarm system ?

I have a 98 and mine didn't. IIRC if the jeep came with it stock there should be a funny black ball in a plastic cover installed in between the two sun visors

I have a 98 sport with the remote entry and there is no little black ball like my 91 has. That was the older systems that used infrared I think. The newer ones use radio waves.
Does it have electric windows and door locks on the drivers door? If it does there is a good chance you have the remote entry.
I had a Ranger and you could train a new remote by a complicated system of key turns and stuff. I don't know if you can do the same with the Jeep.

If you take your ownership to any Chrysler dealer he can punch in your VIN and give you a build sheet of all the options your Jeep came with. It'll also tell you your axles and gear ratios and transfer case model etc.

I have an 01 Cherokee. I gave my VIN to the dealer and they told me it came w/ keyless entry (2 remote I believe.) Well I didn't get any, and you can buy the fobs all over the place for $20-$30. I got mine from Amazon. And the dealer charged me $10 to program... they can't guarantee it will work, but mine did no problem.

When I bought my 98 Classic it came with two remotes. Both of mine are dead but how do you get them open to change the batteries?

Pry them part, there should be a small slot for a coin or screw driver... I'm thinking they take 2 "watch" batteries... 2032 or something like that. You'll see when you get it open!

If you do not have the overhead console, there should be a plastic cover between the visors, the same color as our dash, and unscrew that, if their is a circuit board in their, that is your keyless entry module, if not go buy one from a yard, connect it to the harness, and buy a key fob. However I would recommend a aftermarket keyless compared to the factory because the range is very limited on the factory.
