Remanufactured engine recommendation/guidance.

Hi All,

I’m looking for any recs or good experiences with remanufactured engines. Long story short, I’ve recently had some problems with the stock engine that may require a swap. It’s a 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ Sport, 4.0 inline 6 automatic trans.

Ive had a rec of Jasper Engines by a mechanic but I’m wondering of other good options and experiences.

This Jeep is for my son so reliability, safety and a good cohesive fit with the original truck is top priority. This is not for trailing, off roading or car shows.

Much appreciate any feedback!

That's a bit of a tough one.

What's wrong with the 4.0 that's in it?

Unfortunately with remans, it's a crap shoot. Just make sure to get some kind of warranty with it.

If the person who recommended the Jasper is the same person who told you the block would explode if the head was rebuilt YOU NEED TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Keep in mind that if he worked on the head and the engine blows up because he messed up it's on him. If he throws in a rebuild and it blows up he'll tell you to talk to the rebuilder....and get paid a second time to replace it.

Given the problems you're already having trying to own a 25 year old vehicle ,and the electrical fun hasn't started, it might be best to consider an alternative vehicle. These things could be a huge money pit if you can't do the work yourself.

I'm not trying to be critical, just realistic.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I just did the head on a high mileage engine and had no issues.

Approaching 50K miles on a Jasper 4.3L. Runs like a Swiss watch. 3yr/100K warranty has run out. Warranty is only good if engine is installed by a Jasper recommended shop.
As far as it being a crap shoot that can be avoided by selecting a trusted mechanic. Mine was installed by a good friend who owns a local shop. First engine he installed had a slight internal noise he just didn't like (THANKS to a stethoscope, cruiser). Called Jasper who also decided there was an issue and sent out another engine that evening. So far very good. All labor costs that pertained to replacing the questionable engine were covered by Jasper. And nope I don't work for Jasper.

I pulled mine and had it rebuilt by a local machine shop/engine builder. Very reputable in my area. He did great, talked me through all the parts he used, and was about the same price as a reman. It's bored .20 over, has an erson cam and runs like a frieght train. I love it. My advise: find a good local builder

^^^
I wasn't giving a recommendation for Jasper but was verifying vroomvroom's post by giving my experience with them which the OP asked for. Also I agree with your first post which is why I said to be selective about who does the work. Also after reading what I typed it sounded like a commercial skit for Jasper hence the no I don't work for them part.
Also check this out this. Not that I necessarily trust this site either but it just goes to show you can always find sites online to fit your purpose.
