Reman engines, are they safe?

So I'm wanting to rebuild or replace my engine, price dictates the route. So I am looking at reman engines and searching reviews of the various companies and all I'm finding is nightmare stories of people recieving engines that immediately have issues and the reman company refusing to step up and fix the issue. Who here has went the reman route and what was your experience?

Oh boy! In my opinion how well things work out will depend on the remanufacturer and IMHO most importantly the installer. I've got a Jasper 4.3L in our '96 Blazer that was installed by a friend who owns his own shop and is a certified Jasper dealer. With the first motor on firing it up initially he detected a faint knock in it. He called Jasper. They had him run a few tests and told him another motor would be sent out the next morning. Since then all has been fine. Only thing we pay for are the 3K mile oil changes required by Jasper to meet the 100K warranty requirement.. Not sure how many miles are on it now but a guess would be in the 30K range.

Atk also very good.

Remember that barely anybody goes online to report that they replaced their engine 50k miles ago and everything is going fine. The people that have issues are going to be the vocal ones so it gives you a skewed view.

Jasper is a crapshoot, and even if you do get an engine that doesn't grenade right away, it will not be a quality engine. They do the absolute minimum. For example, if a rod journal needs to be turned .010", one needs .020, and the rest need nothing, you'll get a crank with one journal at .010, one at .020, and the rest untouched. Same with piston bores and all other machinable items.

I got a reman trans from my local Ford dealer for the family beast, and asked if Jasper did their remains. The parts guy said they used to, but had too many quality problems.

You are really better off asking around your location for a quality local shop, and have it rebuilt. If you can't afford a few weeks of down time, buy a beater engine from Craigslist, and have that one rebuilt, then swap.

Mark's 94 engine would drop in your 95 nicely - just sayin' :)

I have had very good luck with ATK engines.
