90 renix stumbling acceleration and down on power
Hi everyone, I have a 90 renix 4.0 with an auto trans. My problem is when I am going up a hill, accelerating or passing on the highway, or any high load situation, I have a stumbling acceleration problem from about 2500 to 3500 rpm. Under normal driving the jeep runs fine and it idles fine also. My first thought was that it was the fuel pump failing but I do not have access to a fuel pressure tester at the moment and I've had the problem for several months now and I figured if the pump was gonna fail it would have done it by now.
I also have a failing neutral safety switch. The jeep is hard to start in park sometimes and I have no reverse lights. I know the NSS also affects the transmission ranges and my jeep does seem to shift a bit abnormally. It's always dropping in and out of overdrive when not under load. Under load it will downshift into the proper gear but stumbles. I do not know if the NSS problem is related to the stumbling. I haven't had much time to troubleshoot lately with school and work and the jeep is my daily driver so any information on what this could possibly be is much appreciated.

How's the color of tranny fluid ? I am having somewhat similar symptoms too, my fluid is not what I like to see color or smell wise.
Tip #10 won't hurt either, going by what you said about it hunting for over drive. I use to run in COMFORT mode and it would hunt for a gear around 40mph, now I leave switch on POWER , no gear hunting.

Some people say to never mess with a older tranny if it don't leak fluid is full and never had a problem don't mess with it.
You could end up causing more harm then good and who wants to end up thinking about replacing a tranny on a car that is over 20 years old.
My tranny fluid has never been touched since it was new and I have no problems.
On a vehicle that runs almost perfect with almost no book value in the car world does it make sense to create a 1500$ problem.
I would check every other possible thing before even touching the tranny.
You could try checking the cable to see if it is loose

My first thoughts are have you checked the trans fuse in your fuse panel, it's a 7.5 fuse and if your power/comfort switch is faulty will cause it to blow ALSO causing reverse lights not to work (at least that was the case with mine)
Second there is a way to adjust the transmission kickdown cable for better shift points, you should have two cables connected to the throttle body one goes to the driver side (gas pedal) the other goes over the valve cover and down under the passenger side (trans kickdown). Near the throttle of the trans cable is kind of a black button, push it. Boom adjusted.
Last couple things, listen to everything cruiser says even if it sounds crazy and you wouldn't believe it would work. ( I chased down and replaced everything but the radiator and electric fan trying to solve an overheating problem, finally I listened to him about replacing the cap on the pressure bottle with a Volvo cap pn:703-1396 I believe, and it worked) and should you decide to do the NSS be careful it's fragile and expensive to replace, I did mine without any problems fortunately.
