redoing the headliner

alright my headliner needs to be replaced badly. i have a 97 sport with the sound bar built into the headboard. how hard is that piece to take out?

also do i have to use headliner material because i am wanting to do mine in camoflage and it is about 19 dollars a yard for the camo headliner material.

i found other cam that is not headliner material at half the price.

what is a good glue to use?

any other things i should know about pulling the headliner out?

Not too sure about the sound bar removal. But any cloth can be adheared. Use the camo cloth for sure. Scrape out all the old foam and lay down 3M adhesive spray on glue. That stuff works great

U can use Formica adhesive just thin it down with a cap to cap half of laquer thinner and shoot it through a normal cup gun. Nice even coat on material and the board. Use a circular motion for a nice even coat and DO NOT spray it so thick it will soak through the material. I'm about to redo mine and my neighbors. I did hotrod interiors for years, its the next vest thing to glue shops use and u can buy it at any home improvement store.

If u like I can take pics and show u its not Hard, secret is clean board with a piece of foam. U have to get all the old material off because headliner material is not forgiving, it will show any trash left one board. Also when u lay it u need to put a plastic bag on your hand and let it fall naturally, its will look like trash if u stretch it. Best policy is to use a yard stick in middle of board and do one half at a time.

most people who have troubles with it either dont remove the foam, or dont get it off all the way. You need to get ALL of the foam off or it will not stick.

Why don't you rip it out and rhino line the inside! I did with my xj and so now I can just hose it out when it gets muddy

jebmccall Sep 26, 2011 11:29 PM

ill pass on the rhino liner dont want my jeep smelling like that crap for a week or two, besides i like real tree camo better. can i use plain fabric or does it need the foam backing?

taythegibs Sep 27, 2011 12:08 AM

you dont need the foam backer, you can use whatever fabric you want. in my 96 zj i used a camo flecce that kinda matched the tan leather

U can use whatever u want. Some fabrics will look funny without a foam of some sort under them.

I have yet to find a spray can adhesive that will hold up long term. If u can use a compressor and cup gun or pressure pot u get a lot higher quality adhesive.
